  • At temples or shrines: move away from stone lanterns, walls, and torii gates which can topple.
  • If shopping in Nishiki Market's narrow covered arcade, drop in place — do not rush for the exits during active shaking.

  • Exit via stairs. Gather passports and phones before leaving.

  • If inside the villa: Drop, Cover, Hold On under a table or in a doorframe. Stay away from the BBQ pit, outdoor furniture, and anything that can shift.
  • If outdoors: Move away from trees, fences, and the lake shoreline. Crouch low, cover your head, and wait for shaking to stop.
  • Do not enter the lake or shoreline during or immediately after shaking — seismic activity can cause seiches (wave surges) in mountain lakes.
After shaking stops
  • Check everyone. Turn off propane tanks and any open flames at the BBQ villa.
  • Check NHK World or Safety Tips app immediately — a significant quake near Fuji may trigger a volcanic alert level change.
  • If authorities issue alert level 3 or above, do not approach the mountain — begin evacuation east/northeast toward Otsuki or the Chuo Expressway.
  • Move to the assembly point below. Yamanashi prefecture has English-language volcanic evacuation routes posted at town shelters.
Primary assembly Fujikawaguchiko Town Hall — official municipal disaster HQ with multilingual support, ~5 min drive from the lake area.
Volcano alert levels Level 1–2: Normal/restricted summit only. Level 3: No approach to mountain. Level 4–5: Evacuate residential area immediately — head east toward Otsuki on Rte 139.
