Earthquake Emergency Plan — Tokyo / Shibuya ▼
- Drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy table or against an interior wall — protect your head and neck with your arms.
- Stay away from windows, exterior walls, and anything that could fall (shelves, TVs, mirrors).
- Do not run outside while shaking continues — falling debris is the primary danger.
- If in an elevator, press every floor button and exit as soon as doors open.
- Turn off gas stoves immediately. Check for fire — if found, evacuate and alert hotel staff.
- Use stairs only — do not use elevators until cleared by staff.
- Grab phones, passports, and cash. Follow hotel staff instructions.

- Drop, Cover, Hold On — get under the Ace Hotel's solid tables or crouch against an interior wall, protecting your head.
- Kyoto has many older wooden structures nearby — stay inside a modern building until shaking fully stops.
- At temples or shrines: move away from stone lanterns, walls, and torii gates which can topple.
- If shopping in Nishiki Market's narrow covered arcade, drop in place — do not rush for the exits during active shaking.
- Turn off any open gas flames. Follow Ace Hotel staff — the hotel is a modern structure and likely a registered shelter.
- Exit via stairs. Gather passports and phones before leaving.
- Avoid narrow Kyoto alleyways (machiya districts) — wooden buildings may have shifted. Use main streets.
- Proceed to assembly point. Kyoto City operates 120+ official shelters; hotel staff will direct you.
Kyoto's kyoto.travel site has English-language disaster safety tips and shelter maps. Hotels and registered ryokan open lobbies as rest areas during disasters — even non-guests can enter.

Earthquake + Volcanic Emergency Plan — Mt. Fuji / Fujikawaguchiko ▼
- If inside the villa: Drop, Cover, Hold On under a table or in a doorframe. Stay away from the BBQ pit, outdoor furniture, and anything that can shift.
- If outdoors: Move away from trees, fences, and the lake shoreline. Crouch low, cover your head, and wait for shaking to stop.
- Do not enter the lake or shoreline during or immediately after shaking — seismic activity can cause seiches (wave surges) in mountain lakes.
- Check everyone. Turn off propane tanks and any open flames at the BBQ villa.
- Check NHK World or Safety Tips app immediately — a significant quake near Fuji may trigger a volcanic alert level change.
- If authorities issue alert level 3 or above, do not approach the mountain — begin evacuation east/northeast toward Otsuki or the Chuo Expressway.
- Move to the assembly point below. Yamanashi prefecture has English-language volcanic evacuation routes posted at town shelters.
Mt. Fuji last erupted in 1707. Current alert level is 1 (normal activity). The Japan Meteorological Agency updates volcanic alert levels in real time — check the Safety Tips app or NHK World for any changes during your stay.

- Shinjuku is one of Tokyo's densest areas — avoid windows; glass from neighboring buildings is a major hazard.
- If in Kabukicho or the entertainment district: drop where you are; crowded narrow streets are dangerous to run through.
- If in Shinjuku Station (world's busiest): follow station staff — they run drills and will direct you to designated shelter areas within the station.
- Exit the hotel via stairs and assemble at the street-level muster point — hotel staff will confirm the location at check-in.
- Expect all train lines to halt for safety inspections — delays of 30 min to several hours are standard.
- Shinjuku City posts multilingual evacuation maps at major intersections and on the Shinjuku foreign residents' website.
- Move to one of the assembly points below; stay off streets near older low-rise blocks to the east of the station.
Shinjuku City's official evacuation map in English is available at foreign.city.shinjuku.lg.jp. The western skyscraper district is actually a designated "stay-in area" — modern towers there are built to remain structurally safe, so sheltering in place on upper floors may be advised by staff.
